Experience report from Gerty with Loki
I got my dog Loki from Romania a good 4 years ago in January 2021. In addition to various anxiety traumas and social restrictions, I also had a lot to deal with Loki's digestion and diet. We tried so many different foods, occasionally changed the food brand, got tips from other dog people and implemented some of them, but somehow it was never really good. Loki sometimes defecated 6 times a day and improvements were only minimal. In the end I only fed one animal protein source and also tried insect protein.
As Loki is my first dog, I groped in the dark for a long time and didn't want to give up. It may sound silly, but a vegan dog advent calendar gave me the idea. I love advent calendars myself, so of course Loki needed one too :) But as nothing was really well tolerated any more, I came across this vegan version.
At first I couldn't really imagine it and heard comments from left and right that dogs are carnivores, etc. In the meantime, I don't really care, because it's the result that counts: Loki has a wonderful digestion with vegan food, a super soft and shiny coat and for me it just feels good to avoid animal suffering for Loki's food. I myself am now vegan again, which I did for a long time a few years ago, then went vegetarian again for a few years and have now switched everything back to plant-based.

We're both doing great and I'm glad to have come across your food. 😍 It's just so amazing that there are such awesome people with great ideas/visions. And through Vegan4Dogs we have of course also become Berlin local patriots.
Loki's diet plan includes (among other things) your fantastic Greta kibble, occasionally some ready-made canned food (Pauline is being tested these days) and then freshly cooked meals 2-3 times a week, topped with your V-Complete. I like to use your nice recipes or those from Andrea Kleist for this. She is a vegan nutritionist for dogs who has also created a recipe plan for Loki. We are doing very well with this food plan and it's so much fun to see how well Loki is doing.
I can only recommend to everyone not to demonise anything straight away, but to listen first and then perhaps allow the thought that this ready-made, often inferior food cannot be healthy for our dogs.
When I was a child, my grandparents used to have a German shepherd. I remember that the greatest thing for me was to give Bero his food in the evening; my grandad mixed potatoes and vegetables that were left over at lunchtime in his bowl and topped it off with a bit of kibble. So there wasn't that much meat back then and Bero got quite old for a big dog. Perhaps people should think back to this and reconsider the amount of meat they give their dogs (and themselves) every day.
