if you want to know exactly…

Vegan dog nutrition still raises many questions, precisely because it is not yet as established as omnivore. To get an overview of the dog's nutritional needs, I highly recommend the scientific reference book 'Ernährung des Hundes' by Meyer/Zentek from 2013, 7th updated edition (as of Feb 2016). The book provides information on general basics such as:

  • Processes of food intake and digestion.
  • Metabolism and requirements, e.g. protein, mineral and vitamin requirements.

It then continues with the basics of feeding and what practical feeding can look like. For example, complete feeds and own rations are explained and the different needs of dogs in different stages of life are discussed.

Finally, nutritional disorders and dietetics are dealt with. Here you can find out about feeding problems and errors, for example, or topics such as obesity and diseases of the digestive tract through to skin diseases. All in all, this is a very in-depth book for those who want to delve deeper into the subject matter. However, it is also clear that it is not a book about vegan dog nutrition, but takes a closer look at the dog's nutritional needs. Vegetarian feeding is also mentioned here and there, but basically the book provides information on which nutrients the dog needs and gives examples of the ingredients from which these can be obtained.

Since it is a reference book, it naturally has its price of 69,99€.

You can have a look at the book here
